Pre-School Sessions

Our sessions are organised so that the children can choose from - and work at - a range of activities that enables them to gain the ability to select and work through a task to its completion.

We also encourage children to take part in small and large group activities, which introduces them to new experiences, gain new skills and helps them to learn working with others.

The children also have the opportunity during sessions to take part in outdoor activities.  This contributes to children's health, their physical development and their knowledge of the world around them.

Our Pre-School offers education and care for children between 2 and 5 years old, for sessions or full day care.  A typical session, either morning or afternoon, will generally follow the pattern of - Registration, Free Flow Play (indoors and outdoors), Snack time, Outdoor Playtime, Story Time, Lunch/Home time.

Our Pre-School operates to the Oxfordshire School Term and Holiday Dates, the current 2008/2009 Terms & Holiday Dates are available to download at the bottom of this page.

Rising R's

The Rising R's sessions are held on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and are only available for the children who are going to Primary School in the following academic year.  During these sessions, we focus on developing the skills required for Reception Class.  We pay particular attention to each child's literacy and numeracy skills, helping them develop to their potential in these areas.  We also work on developing their concentration skills, social skills and help build up their self-confidence by offering each child the opportunity to stand up and talk to the whole group of children through specially designed activities.

We must emphasis that children will learn at their own time and at different rates.  We will not and do not push any child to complete the activities and we are just working with the child to give them the opportunity to have the basic grounding if they are keen and ready for it.

During the Rising R's sessions, we provide the children with a range of additional activities that are not available during normal sessions.

Computer Suite - We are very privileged to be able to use the Computer Suite at Dr Radcliffe's Primary School.  This enables the children to develop their Knowledge and Understanding of the World, in particular, their Information Communication Technology (ICT) development.  This is done through being introduced to computers; the children practice mouse control skills and learn about how to operate simple computer programmes.

Footsteps Training - This is a traffic awareness programme, which has been specifically designed by Oxfordshire County Council's Road Safety Team, to encourage children to discover road safety practices for themselves through questioning, rather than being given instructions or rules.

Dr Radcliffe's Reception Class - The children in the Rising R's sessions are taken on a rota basis to Dr Radcliffe's Reception Class, to spend time there and to gain experience of a Primary School Reception Class.

Aston Bear - Throughout the year each child is given the opportunity to take Aston Bear home for the week and draw or write about what he has been doing whilst on holiday with you.  Your child will then be able to talk to the whole group about what Aston Bear did.  This has always been very popular with parents and children alike and you can find all the diaries in the foyer area.

Show and Tell - This is where children can bring something from home, talk about it to the whole class and then answer questions from the other children in the session.

Physical Education (PE) - The children have the opportunity to take part in PE sessions during the Summer Term, this enables them to be familiar and confident in PE sessions at Primary School.

Elementary Spanish or French - With the voluntary help of a Spanish/French speaking parent, the children are introduced to the Spanish/French language.

Lunch Club

Lunch Clubs are very popular with children and adults, eating represents a social time for children and adults and helps children to learn about healthy eating.

If your child attends a lunch club, please provide them with a packed lunch in a suitable clearly named container, with a cool pack if desired.

We encourage healthy foods for lunch and support health eating practices in our on going provision.  We would prefer that children were not sent with chocolate bars, sweets and high sugar drinks.  Water is always available in Pre-School for those children who prefer fresh water at lunch.

Allergy advice:  Due to the increase in allergies we do not permit children to bring in nuts/peanuts in their lunch packs, or products that contain nut/peanuts.
